Charcoal kaya toast, hand-pulled kopi and brunch plates, in an old Ipoh shophouse with notes taped to every wall.

Come for Set Pagi at 7am, stay for nasi lemak at noon. Tables of 2 to 12, a back-lane patio, and delivery across Ipoh on GrabFood and foodpanda.

Four things regulars order without opening the menu

If it is your first visit, start here. Each one has been on the wall since the day we opened, and none of them has changed recipe since.

  • Roti bakar kaya butter

    RM 4.20

    Thick-cut bread toasted over binchotan until the edges crack. Our pandan kaya is stirred for three hours every morning, then a cold slab of butter goes on last so it melts at the table.

  • Kopi putih Tampal

    RM 3.80

    Liberica and robusta beans roasted with butter at a small roaster down the road. Pulled from a cloth sock, sweetened with condensed milk, served in the green-and-blue cups you grew up with.

  • Nasi lemak ayam berempah

    RM 16.90

    Rice steamed in santan and pandan, a whole chicken leg marinated overnight in 11 spices, and Mak Jah's sambal, sweet first and hot a few seconds later.

    Three fluffy pancakes coloured with real pandan juice, soaked in warm gula Melaka and finished with salted coconut cream. The brunch plate we post the most.

Halal certified, not just "no pork, no lard"

Our kitchen has held halal certification since 2021. The certificate (no. DEMO-0000-2021, renewed to 31 December 2027) hangs by the counter, and every supplier we buy meat, sauces and flavourings from holds its own. There is no alcohol anywhere in the kitchen, including in the cakes and the vanilla.

Why we say this plainly: a "no pork, no lard" sign only describes the menu. Certification means the supply chain, storage and kitchen are audited too. Ask to see the certificate any time.

From a market cart to a wall full of notes

"Tampal" means to stick something on. It started as a joke about the notes on our walls and became the name. We are a small team of 14 in Ipoh Old Town, still roasting, stirring and pulling everything the slow way.

  1. 2019

    A kopi cart at the Saturday market

    Adib Rahman quit his office job in KL, came home to Ipoh and borrowed his aunt's kaya recipe. The cart sold 60 cups on the first morning and ran out of bread by 9.

  2. 2021

    The shophouse on Jalan Tampal Kertas

    We took over a 1930s shophouse with a cracked mosaic floor and kept almost everything. Mak Jah joined the kitchen and brought her nasi lemak with her.

  3. 2023

    The wall of notes

    A regular taped a thank-you note above his table. Now there are more than 3,000 notes, receipts and doodles on the walls. Bring a pen; we have tape.

  4. 2026

    Catering and a back-lane patio

    We opened 20 seats in the back lane under the old awning, and started a kopi cart that comes to your office, kenduri or wedding.

We have fed 180 office mornings and 64 weddings since 2024. Book at least 5 working days ahead for offices, and 3 weeks ahead for a kopi cart on a weekend.

Two streets from the river, opposite the old market. Park in the market car park (RM 1 per hour, free after 6pm) and walk 3 minutes. The front step is flat, and there is a ramp through the back-lane patio.

Reserve a table

We hold tables for 15 minutes. Walk-ins are always welcome, but weekend mornings between 8 and 11 fill up, so book ahead for groups of 4 or more.

Seating

You get a WhatsApp confirmation within 10 minutes during opening hours.

Questions we get at the counter

Do I need a booking?

Not for 1 to 3 people on weekdays. For weekends between 8am and 11am, or groups of 4 or more, please reserve. We hold a table for 15 minutes.

Is the whole menu halal?

Yes. The kitchen is halal certified and all our meat, sauces and flavourings come from certified suppliers. There is no alcohol in any dish or dessert.

Do you have vegetarian options?

Yes, look for the green Vegetarian tag on the menu. Our kaya, cakes, shakshuka and pancakes are all vegetarian. We do not have vegan cakes yet.

Can I bring my own cake?

Yes, for a RM 15 plating fee, which includes candles, plates and a pot of kopi for the table. Please tell us when you book.

How do I pay?

Cash, cards, DuitNow QR and most e-wallets at the counter. Catering is paid 50% on booking and 50% one day before.

Is it kid friendly?

Very. We have 4 high chairs, a kids' toast set at RM 5.90, and a paper wall at child height for drawings.

Can I buy your kaya or kopi beans?

Yes. Kaya jars (RM 16 for 250 g) and 500 g bags of our kopi putih roast (RM 32) are at the counter. Kaya keeps 7 days in the fridge.
